The Honourable Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence, meets with the Honourable Guido Crosetto, Italian Secretary of State for Defence in Rome, Italy, August 1, 2011. Minister Fantino and Secretary of State Crosetto reaffirmed Canada and Italy's bilateral defence relationship. Italy is an important Canadian ally in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) with common defence priorities including the multinational Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program and participation in the ongoing NATO-led air campaign in Libya and training mission in Afghanistan.

This Memorial bares compelling signficance to Canadians in remembrance of our military's biggest battle of the 1943 Sicilian campaign during World War II. Agira is the final resting place of 490 Canadians who sacrificed their lives to earn freedom for future generations of Canadians.
