Vaughan, October 26, 2011 – The honourable Julian Fantino Associate Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Vaughan today issued the following statement to recognize Diwali:
“Today, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists in Canada and around the world will begin celebrating Diwali, one of the most important festivals of their heritage.
Also known as the “Festival of Lights” and the "Bandhi Chhor Diwas", it is a celebration of the ultimate triumph of good over evil, which is marked by the lighting of diyas, and by sharing sweets and snacks with family and friends.
In Canada, Diwali is an opportunity for Canadians of all faiths and cultural backgrounds to take part in local festivities, such as fireworks displays, gift-giving and by enjoying traditional foods. In bringing together people of different faiths and cultural communities, and by spreading a message of peace and friendship, it is a celebration that can serve to strengthen our country.
As Member of Parliament for Vaughan, I extend my best wishes for a happy Diwali to all those celebrating with family, friends and neighbours.
Namaste. Sat Sri Akaal.
